Island Thanksgiving: Round 2

Since Thanksgiving is an American holiday, it isn't celebrated in St. Vincent. We don't get any time off, but we still do our best to celebrate. This year, like last year, Luke had an exam the day after Thanksgiving, but since it was a more simple exam, we didn't have to rush right home after eating to study. This island life isn't always ideal, but we have so much to be grateful for. We have our health, our home, food, friends, a wonderful church, and beautiful weather. During the holidays spent on the island, I'm always especially thankful for technology that allows me to talk to my family in the states. If anything, moving to St. Vincent has taught me to not take as much for granted and to be grateful for all of the little things.
This year for Thanksgiving, a missionary couple graciously invited us to join them for a meal, but with Luke's school schedule and our lack of transportation, we had to decline. Our friends Thomas & Natalie who live right near campus also invited us over along with another couple, John & Rebekah. After Luke finished his classes for the day, we took the bus to campus and walked to their house. We had a fantastic time relaxing, watching football, eating delicious food, and playing with little John & Colbie, the two children. We all especially enjoyed the meal. Thanksgiving food just tastes so yummy! We didn't have turkey, but we had mashed potatoes and gravy, rolls with cinnamon butter, homemade apple cider, green bean casserole, cornbread stuffing, and cranberry whirls over chicken! We also had apple pie and pumpkin pie, complete with ice cream and cool whip! I'm getting hungry just remembering that meal!

These two are the cutest little friends! 
It's hard to be away from family during the holidays, but God has blessed us with incredible friends who make life here so much more fun! We are so grateful & blessed!

As much as we loved vacationing for almost two months after our wedding, we were very excited to unpack our bags in the first place we would call home together. We arrived at the Thomas Apartments in the Diamond Community, and searched for apartment #14 along with the welcoming committee who had picked us up from the airport. We found out place, and eagerly unlocked the door. I was picturing a very small, practically one room apartment, but much to my surprise and delight, we opened the door to a pretty good sized kitchen. Island Lessons

As crazy as moving to a tiny Caribbean island was, I'm so grateful for all the experiences we had and all the things we learned.  Although it wasn't our original plan to end up there, it was God's plan. God knew we needed that time and those experiences.   Here are a few things I learned: ♡ I learned not to take things for granted, even the little things. Before we moved to St. Vincent, I thought I was a pretty grateful person. When I arrived, my whole perspective changed. I no longer take electricity, hot water (or even water at all) for granted. Our hot water was solar powered, so when it rained all day, we didn't have hot water. Unfortunately, rainy days were the days when I really wanted a hot shower! ♡ Air conditioning is a beautiful thing. When we first arrived at the E.T. Joshua airport in St. Vincent, I was amazed at how small it was. There was no air conditioning in the stuffy area where we had to go through customs and get our bags. Everyone was h...

Swimming with Sea Turtles

On Friday, March 30th, Luke and I had the opportunity to visit the Tobago Cays. We caught an H van in the morning to be at the marina by 8:30am. When the boat arrived, we thought they were joking. It was a speedboat big enough to fit 18 of us, but compared to the catamarans and yachts around it, it looked tiny!  Our boat. Luke and I found a nice bench seat in front of the captain and under the shade. Since Luke spends the majority of his time here studying in the library, I knew his poor skin wouldn't be able to handle the sun all day. Thankfully, the waves were not too rough, and the trip only took about two hours. It was fun to see some of the other grenadine islands as we passed. The captain even took a little detour so we could see the marina at Canouan.
