A Day in Bequia

Going to Bequia (pronounced "Beck way") is always a fun time! When Luke's sister Bekah came to visit, we took a trip to Bequia with her and our friend, Luke's fellow classmate, Rob. Since we had the rental car, we were able to drive it right onto the ferry for the ride over. When we arrived our first stop was Ft. Hamilton, an unimpressive fort with beautiful views!

Our next stop was the turtle sanctuary. This place had been on my bucket list for awhile, but in all of our Bequia trips, we hadn't had a chance to visit it yet. It costs about $5 USD per person to get in, and it is a great experience. At first, we weren't sure how it was going to be. The young employee who greeted us, upon finding out that Luke and Rob were medical students, promptly informed them that they were wasting their time going into the medical profession because he had no health issues after smoking weed for most of his life. Thankfully, he was more friendly and helpful later. As we entered the building, we saw that most of the tanks holding the turtles were dry, so we were able to watch him clean and refill the tanks. It was fun to watch the turtles swim against the current of incoming water. We were allowed to pet all of them except the babies. We discovered that when you scratch the turtle's shells, they will kind of dance, rolling back and forth. After Rob asked, the employee gave us permission to hold some of the turtles! We picked up some of the smaller turtles on our own, and the employee brought over a forty pound turtle for us to hold!

We spent most of the morning at the turtle sanctuary before heading for the beach. This trip we tried a new beach called Lower Bay Beach. It was beautiful, secluded, and peaceful. A couple of stray dogs found us and decided to be friends with us. One climbed onto Luke's towel and thought he would stay there.

After enjoying the beach for awhile, we headed to our favorite restaurant on Bequia, Mac's Pizza! We ordered pizza, macaroni and cheese, and half a lobster! Everything was so delicious!

We walked along the Belmont walkway, a walkway that curves along the water's edge, to an ice cream shop, where I got one of my favorite island flavors, passion fruit! I also found a sea urchin, the white ones that have sharp spikes, but don't sting you, and I picked it up so Luke, Bekah, and Rob could see it too. As we always do in Bequia, we had a wonderful, adventurous day! I'm so grateful we were able to spend time with family and friends in such a beautiful place.
